The Stichting Waternet wishes to conduct a practical test of an ecosystem approach to control crayfish, based on the model by Kleef et al. (2022). The test will take place in a compartment of approximately 2 ha, while measures will be deployed on a larger scale in the 50 ha large water level area Molenpolder Natuurreservaat. This allows an intensive approach to be compared with a less intensive variant. Waternet retains control and divides the work into lots: one part will be carried out internally, while another part will be realized by a selected market party through a lot scheme. A detailed Program of Requirements has been drawn up for each lot. The assignment is an open procedure for services, aimed at testing, evaluating, and implementing a sustainable, affordable approach for the management of crayfish.

The scope of this total project is the execution of a practical test for an ecosystem approach to control crayfish based on Kleef et al., 2022. In a compartment of over 2 ha (figure [removed]), as complete a system approach as possible will be carried out. And in the entire water level area Molenpolder Natuurreservaat (50 ha), measures for an ecosystem approach will be implemented that are feasible and affordable on this larger scale. In this way, we can compare an intensive and a less intensive approach. The project team wishes to maintain control and therefore divides the project into lots.

08Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of the practical test in the Molenpolder?
The purpose is to conduct a practical test for an ecosystem approach to control crayfish, based on the model by Kleef et al. (2022). In this, an intensive approach in a compartment of over 2 ha is compared with a less intensive, feasible, and affordable approach in the entire 50 ha water level area.
How is the execution of the work organized?
The project team maintains control and has divided the project into lots. A part of the work is carried out by Waternet itself, while another part is realized by a market party selected through an award procedure via a lot scheme.
On which methodology is the ecosystem approach based?
The practical application of the ecosystem approach for controlling crayfish is based on the methodology of Kleef et al. (2022).
